Most clients approach a neuropsychologist for help understanding any changes to cognition, emotion, and/or personality following illness or injury that affects the brain. Some clients will require a full neuropsychological assessment, but this is not always indicated. After assessment, or if assessment is not required, we enter into neuropsychological rehabiliation through on-going 50 minute sessions. I insist on first sessions and assessments being in person, but on-going rehabiliation sessions can be arranged online.

Typically we will meet for a first session of 50 minutes to establish what medical and psychological events have lead you to seek out a neuropsychologist, and then we will discuss the best route forward for your treatment. If a full assessment is required, we will schedule a 2 hour appointment where you will complete a series of verbal and pen-and-paper tasks so we can identify your cognitive strengths and possible areas of difficulty. We will then meet again for a 50 minute session where I will provide feedback, and we will discuss how your medical and/or psychological history is connected to these difficulties, and what type of rehabilitation is appropriate. Rehabiliation can include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and/or speech therapy. We will also discuss the role of neuropsychology in providing the support you need throughout your rehabiliation, especially in ensuring you fully understand the implications of your brain injury and in learning to overcome or manage any changes in mood and/or personality.

In some cases, clients are referred to a neuropsychologist in the context of an insurance or disability claim. In these cases we will have the 50 minute history session, the two-hour assessment, and a 50 minute feedback session, and I will also complete a report for the necessary insurance company.
